Donald Trump’s campaign team has developed something of a playbook to follow when he faces criminal charges. Trump announced on his social media platform last night that he had been indicted in connection with classified documents found at his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, saying he was due to appear in a Miami court next Tuesday at 3pm. It’s the first time a former president has faced federal charges (local prosecutors in New York have filed criminal charges against Trump in a separate case). US reports say seven charges, including a conspiracy to obstruct justice, false statements and violations of the Espionage Act, have been filed by Jack Smith, the special counsel who’s also investigating Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election. Trump is favourite to win the 2024 Republican presidential nomination; less than an hour after he revealed the indictment, his campaign sent out a fundraising email.
