After endless films about giant sharks or deep trench aliens, The Dive captures the claustrophobic terror the ocean can induce in a genuinely nerve-wracking thriller. Sisters Drew (Sophie Lowe) and May (Louisa Krause) go diving in a remote wilderness. Within 15 minutes, safety conscious May is trapped in an underwater cave and the flighty Drew has the rest of the film to try and save her. Director Maximilian Erlenwein skillfully deploys flashlight beams, gurgling oxygen bubbles and glimpses of sunlight to drive the tension, with Krause trying to calm herself and while Lowe dashes between rescue missions and fresh oxygen tanks.
