Thousands feared dead in Libya floods

Last week Storm Daniel pummelled central and northern Greece, leaving at least ten dead and causing billions of euros of damage. The storm strengthened as it moved south, with thousands of people now feared dead in Libya. A minister in the eastern government – the country is divided between rival administrations – told Reuters this morning that more than 1,000 bodies have been recovered in the coastal city of Derna, after the storm destroyed dams near the city, worsening the floods. “I am not exaggerating when I say that 25 per cent of the city has disappeared,” said Hichem Chkiouat, minister of civil aviation. Libya has competing governments based in Tripoli, the capital, and eastern Libya, with public services and access to aid crushed after years of fighting.
