Joe Biden will travel to Israel on Wednesday as the region teeters on the edge of an abyss. The US president said he will “stand in solidarity” with Israelis after Hamas’s terrorist attack on 7 October. He will also travel to Jordan to address the “dire humanitarian needs” facing Palestinians in the Gaza Strip under Israeli bombardment, meeting with the leaders of Jordan, Egypt and the Palestinian Authority. Ahead of an expected ground invasion, this is already the deadliest of five Gaza wars for both sides: more than 2,800 Palestinians have been killed and 11,000 wounded, with more than 1,400 Israelis killed and at least 199 others taken hostage by Hamas. The World Health Organization told AFP that there were 24 hours of water, electricity and fuel left in Gaza.
