Icons and bullets

Icons and bullets

Imagine an icon of St Andrew with a bullet hole near his head, or a child’s drawing of a heart pierced by shrapnel. These and other images are on view at the Canada Gallery in London – icons and pictures painted by professional artists and Ukrainian children on body armour which once saved the lives of Ukrainian soldiers fighting against Russia. The kevlar plates have been used as canvases to save lives again: some will be sold at auction, and the proceeds spent on demining equipment, rehabilitation therapy and more safety gear in Ukraine. Two pieces by children are anonymous because their creators live in occupied Crimea, where it would be dangerous if they were identified.

At Canada House until 31 January
