
Hailed by Cabinet minister Oliver Dowden as leading the Conservatives’ “fantastic” campaign team, Tony Lee was until yesterday one of the countless influential party people who stay in the shadows. Given the state of the Tory campaign, he might have hoped to stay there. But the latest gambling scandal has dragged this backroom operator into the spotlight. Lee took a leave of absence two weeks before the country goes to the polls after the BBC revealed he and his wife Laura Saunders, the party’s candidate in Bristol North West, were being investigated by the Gambling Commission. The investigation concerns a bet relating to the timing of the general election. Saunders is the second Tory candidate to be investigated over such allegations.
