A group of Melbourne-based Jewish academics and creatives are threatening legal action against the New York Times after one of its reporters downloaded and shared the contents of their WhatsApp chat, leading to death threats.
In February 600 members of the “Jewish Australian creatives and academics” group, founded in the wake of the October 7th attack, had their contact details, photographs and social media accounts leaked online.
Last week the Wall Street Journal identified NYT reporter Natasha Frost – at one point a member of the group – as the person who shared its contents with an unnamed contact.
The leak has prompted the Australian government to fast track anti-doxxing laws which criminalise “the intentional online exposure of an individual’s identity, private information or personal details without their consent.”
In a statement released by the NYT, Frost said she “was shocked by these events, which put me and many others at terrible risk. I deeply regret my decision.” She remains on the staff of the paper.
