Government 'opt-out' proposal for AI training data rejected by creative coalition

A coalition of creative workers has called on the UK government to protect their licensing rights from AI companies trying to train their AI models on copyrighted data for free. The Creative Rights in AI Coalition released a statement asking for a “robust copyright framework which preserves our exclusive rights”.

The coalition released polling data suggesting most people in the UK believe companies should pay royalties to the creators of text, audio, or video that they use to train AI models.

The government has proposed an “opt-out” framework, introducing an exception to copyright law for AI training. The EU has already adopted a similar opt-out framework when it passed the AI Act in August.

Critics say this exploits creators, particularly small-scale or independent artists and publishers.
